In a perfect world, we would all be living next to pleasant, salt-of-the-earth people who would randomly send home-cooked delicacies, never fail to give a warm greeting, and gladly watch over our pets when we’re gone.
But of course, that’s not how reality works. Instead, some of us will have weird, entitled, and crazy neighbors who will make life more challenging and colorful, to put it lightly. These are the types of people you would see posted on the Nextdoor subreddit.
If you’re learning about this online community for the first time, here are some posts from the page. Scroll through and see what they are all about.

#3 💀
If you think about it, sharing stories or screenshots of a neighbor’s social media posts to an online community is a form of gossip. And when we say gossip, we immediately get a negative impression.
However, sociologist and social psychologist Rob Willer says this type of chatter isn’t always bad.

#6 Little Girl Next Door Gave Me A Roll Of Quarters And A Note Because I Let Her Pick Tomatoes From My Garden. What Should I Do?
So I have a tomato garden that I’ve been doing for a while every year. The little girl next door loves coming over and picking a basket for herself and playing with my shihtzu. I help her out when she’s selling fundraiser stuff for school, give her full size candy bars for Halloween, etc. she’s around 10 now and this is the first time she’s done this. Kind of got a tear in my eye because of how thoughtful it was and how kind she is! So since this is the first time I can remember that this has happened to me, not really sure how to respond. I dont want to keep the actual money she gave me, so should I return it and give her a small gift for herself? Or maybe when I’m doing my garden this year I’ll leave a patch for her to plant something for herself? I’m probably overthinking this but like I said it’s the first time something like this has happened to me. Advice would be great! Thank you!
“Gossip gets a bad rap, but we’re finding evidence that it plays a critical role in the maintenance of social order,” Willer said.
Willer’s former colleague at UC Berkeley and fellow social psychologist Matthew Feinberg shared a similar sentiment, stating that we shouldn’t feel guilty for gossiping if it helps prevent others from being taken advantage of.

#9 Where Are His Parents?
If we were to piggyback on Feinberg’s statement, we could argue that gossiping or discussing current events, whether local or national, creates a sense of community. And according to a 2024 Pew Research survey, a chunk of Americans are already relying on neighbors more as trusted resources than mainstream media.

The survey also highlighted that local news is still passed around primarily through word of mouth, with 62% of respondents reporting this. Only 12% get their news via text or email, and 25% on social media.

According to the survey, Americans also respond to local crime news through social interaction. Specifically, 73% of U.S. adults say they’ve spoken to either family members or neighbors about crime in their community.
These are quite interesting findings, considering we live in an age when most interactions happen online.
